Fatih Sultan Mehmet II

At the time, and for centuries, Constantinople was a symbol of unchallenged power and glory. It was the seat of power of the mighty Holy Roman Emperor which consisted of a thriving seaport connecting Asia through the Bosphorus and Europe via the “Golden Horn”. At the age of 21, Sultan Mehmet, was acutely aware of the geo-political, historical and cultural importance of gaining a stronghold in Constantinople. Constantinople, boasted of Christianity’s second most revered Holy Site, the 6th century marvel, Hagia Sophia; the jewel of Constantinople. Eventually, the loss of this city and the beloved Hagia Sophia to the Muslims,...

Fatih Sultan Mehmet II Episode 1

𝙁𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙝 Sultan Mehmet II is given the title 𝙁𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙝 (The Victorious) - the one who conquered the capital of the Byzantine Empire, 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗶𝗻 𝟭𝟰𝟱𝟯, and marked the end of the mighty Byzantine Empire. The Ottomans had long eyed “𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲” which would provide them a safe passage into Christian Europe and would also crown them as 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱. Mehmet’s conviction found firm grounds in the Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) prophecy about the city;  ‘‘𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐞!’ [Musnad Ahmad] A true heir...

The TorchBearers: Honoring Muslim Leaders

Fatih Sultan Mehmet II: A legacy of Strategy, Planning and Undeterred Resolve Episode 3: Fulfillment of the Prophecy A popular saying at the time was “Better the Turkish turban than the Papal tiara.” The relations between Orthodox Byzantines and followers of the Catholic Church were so volatile that Mehmet’s task became inadvertently easier. The Emperor, Constantine, was aware that there was little that bound his people together, within the formidable walls, even if help arrived from the West. Mehmet was able to lay a 53-day siege despite significant losses such as the loss of his tunnel engineers and workers through a...
